Clarence Brown Memorial String Band - Indianapolis - Indiana - '67

Ok, well the name may have been a little weird, but it sure stood out. Clarence Brown Memorial String Band. Influenced by the likes of the Yardbirds and the Young Rascals, these Pike High school students strived to bring a unique approach to music, as evidenced by the attention-getting moniker.
From top:
Garry Neal - organ
Toby Myers - bass
Danny Ellis - drums
Jim Thornberry - guitar

Of course we all know Toby went on to Indy's own Roadmaster, a long stint with some guy named Mellencamp, and is kickin' it now with his own band No Net. Check them out, loads of fun! Not sure about the other CBMSB band mates, but as always, I'll be looking and sharing with you.

It was The Clarence Brown Memorial String Band, not Clarence Brown's....

CBMSB was named in honor of Pike HS class of 66 Jack “Clarence” Brown. Being some years younger I didn’t personally know Mr. Brown but I do have two dim memories of him. 1, sitting low in the driver’s seat of his Corvette in the parking lot of the Big Boy in Old Augusta and the other, under the hood fixing his throttle linkage with a guitar string in the high school parking lot. With his longish hair visible through the driver’s window of his Corvette I always imagined he quite resembled Brian Jones. These sightings were obviously post graduation since any hair over the ears, touching the collar or eyebrows vas shtrickly verboten at Pike. (Unless you were Ken Mahlke: Sounds Unlimited) Riding the bus with Toby and being familiar with the boys in Brand X, I was privy to a few stories about Jack’s legendary exploits. Apparently Jack’s family had to part with the family farm for the building of the newly proposed Eagle Creek Reservoir and Park. (“Absolutely no private property will ever border the lake”) I believe that they were fairly compensated for rumors were Jack had a new remote control TV in his bedroom and the Vette was self evident. But some of the stories…. Toby almost walking out the upstairs door at the residence into midair because that part of the house, unbeknownst to Toby, was no longer there. The annoying cow that had the audacity to wake Jack up at the wrong time. Those are the two I remember most but I’m sure there are more.
