Galabooches - Northern Indiana

The Galabooches. I had almost forgotten about the Galabooches when I received an inquiry about a 45 for sale. I didn't have an extra, and it turns out her father (band member) didn't have one either. I find this is not unusual. Time is our friend and is certainly a pack-rat.

The Galabooches were comprised of:

Lonnie Lawson - Drummer
Thelmer Lawson - Lead Singer
Martin Pickett -
Hector Hogan -
Gary Brewer -

The Galabooches left us a great 45, with a rockin' go away girl song, backed with a broken love ballad.

I'll Never Work Out <--click to play!
She Doesn't Care <--click to play!

The band should have left us more material! The Galabooches defied sleuthing for over 45 years, and I'm proud to have them here! Let's get some comments going to show the appreciation!

This just in! Photo shows brothers Thelmer and Lonnie in the background at drumset. Nice gear!

I have been looking for a copy of this outstanding 45 for some time. They had a nice sound. Do you happen to know how long the group was together? Thanks for the post

I'm guessing this was released early in 1967. I stopped by Bud Pressner's studio in the late 70's to try and elicit some information about the Staff and Hi-Hat releases, but didn't have much luck. Said he was too busy. He did give me a 12 January 1967 recording date for #186, which happened to be on the Frontier label (Rex White was the artist; I had both of these in my collection at the time.) Everything was in the same numbering series, so this was probably a spring 1967 recording date, I should think.

Hi all. Dave here. I grew up in East Gary and lived in the house directly behind the Lawson home. I took guitar lessons from Thelmer in 1968. I can still remember riding on a flatbed trailer "playing" their song in a parade. Jack boots, straight leg black pants, white turtle neck shirts and a black jacket. Thelmer gave me a love of music I still own to this day...egads...almost 50 years ago. If anyone knows how to get hold of the girl Summer who commented on here, I have the 45 to give her. Thanks.

Oh Dave please tell me you still have it!! This is Summer Newlin (Lawson), I've been searching for years...years to find a copy of this record to frame for my dad. My uncle Moe (Thelmer) found a copy a long time ago that he keeps framed but never found another copy. Please contact me at newlinsa@gmail.com THANK YOU!!

Well I can’t believe I’m reading this. My name happens to be “Thelmer Lawson! I am surprised to read about this blog and am grateful that The Galabooches left an impression on a few people and hoping that they were fans. I don’t play in a group any longer but music is still who I am and will always be. I now live in Texas and I just retired from Texas Department of Criminal Justice. Yep it’s a long stretch from Rock and Roll to a prison guard CO5. I still play and fact I have my own studio to record and was thinking of re-recording IT’LL NEVER WORK OUT! Being a Galaboochie back then was a learning experience but was mostly fun. By the way...the song is available on iTunes as a collection of garage bands just search “The Galabooches” I have a few more songs recorded if anyone would like a CD for free. Just e- mail me “lynnlaw50@yahoo.com” just drop me a line and I will get right to it and to you.P.S. Dave who lived behind me...I have a Neice who would love to give her dad Lonnie a record of these songs. So hit me up and I will put you in touch. Hope to hear from anyone about The Galabooches. Later!

I heard "It'll never work out" as a 14 year old now so many years later it's still cool. I met Thelmer as that 14 year old through my cousin and it may have swayed my path for a bit. I mean who doesn't want to be a rock star? I was even in a band out of high school. Turns out you have to eat though. Glad i found this blog too.

Hello Thelmer, you may not remember me but my son Jr was looking at my wife Sheryl’s phone and seen your Post about the band the Galaboochies and the record we made in 1967, at Bud Pressners recording Studio in Gary, Lake County, Indiana,USA. (She doesn’t Care & It’ll Never Work Out). My Wife Sheryl passed Away on the 20th May 2021, Pastor Johnny Hurt Preached her funeral. I got to see many old friends, your sister Sheila & her daughter Theresa, your niece Summer Newlin dau/of your brother Lonnie. To name a few.. Lonnie showed me the Galaboochies record he had received & a pic & listing from the Newspaper where we won the battle of the bands in Oct. 1967 showing us receiving our Trophies. Back on my 70th Birthday Sheryl (my wife) gave me a glass Pic Frame, in it she put one of my band uniforms, the record we made & pic’s of us riding on the back of that flatbed on the 4th of July parade & pic’s of us playing when we won the battle of the bands, also another newspaper pic & listing of us receiving our Trophies at the Comunity Center, (remember when we broke the attendence record there) Sure had some good times then!! Haven’t seen Hector or Jackie since I went into the Army in 1968. great to have seen Lonnie,Think about all of you all the time!! Sure glad my son seen your post!!! hope you see my Post. Your old Galaboochie Buddy, Gary R Brewer Sr. 03, June 2021.
